Newcastle United have given manager Alan Pardew permission to hold talks with Premier League rivals Crystal Palace.
The 53-year-old fuelled speculation that he will return to Selhurst Park when he failed to appear at a media conference following Newcastle s 3-2 victory over Everton on Sunday.
And the Tyneside club revealed on Monday that they have agreed a compensation package with Palace and Pardew has been permitted to enter negotiations with the London outfit, who sacked Neil Warnock on Saturday following a 3-1 home defeat by Southampton on Boxing Day.
A statement on Newcastle s official website said: Newcastle United can confirm that Crystal Palace have made a formal approach requesting permission to speak to Alan Pardew in relation to their vacant managerial position.
Crystal Palace have offered compensation at a level whereby Alan has now been permitted to speak to them.
As a result of this development today (Monday), Alan will not be at training on Tuesday. Training will be the responsibility of assistant manager John Carver.
The Club will make a further announcement in due course.
Pardew spent four years at Palace in his playing days, scoring the winning goal in a shock 4-3 FA Cup semi-final win over Liverpool back in 1990.
The former Southampton boss has spent four years at St James Park and is the fourth longest serving manager in the top four tiers of English football behind Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger, Paul Tisdale at Exeter City and MK Dons Karl Robinson.
Pardew has endured a turbulent reign at Newcastle and had to contend with protests from sections of supporters who wanted him sacked, particularly during a dismal run in the second half of last season.
The Londoner signed an eight-year contract in 2012, but looks set to return to the capital.
Palace are third-bottom of the Premier League after winning only three top-flight games in the first half of the season.
